The Juneteenth flag. The white star and surrounding starburst alludes to Texas and the "freedom of African Americans in all 50 states." The curve behind the star is representative of a new horizon and the colors were taken from the red, white, and blue flag of the US.

Robin Washington, editor at The Forward, points out that General Granger's announcement of the Proclamation was less to inform the enslaved, many of whom already knew,  but to make sure that slave holders knew—and that the Federal Government was willing to enforce the order, at bayonet point if necessary.
